YogaSprouts in the community

YogaSprouts in the community

In my last post I talked a lot about creating community. Since then I’ve been fortunate to take YogaSprouts into communities in the greater San Diego area. I am assisting a weekly kids community class with the incredible Creative Growth Yoga team on Thursdays at 1:30 in Ocean Beach at Indie Yoga. Bring your elementary school aged child to come practice yoga, breathing and mindfulness in a playful, social setting. You can drop in for a class and if you like it you can purchase a package as this class will be ongoing ,through the end of the school year. Children of all abilities are welcome and if you have any questions about your individual child feel free to contact me for more info.

YogaSprouts has also been in Chula Vista where students at a special education preschool have been participating in weekly small group yoga classes. These classes are coordinated with current educational themes, including key vocabulary and concepts reinforced throughout the children’s school day. What makes yoga such a special component to their education is the experience of learning through movement. This concept, I recently learned, is called: experiential learning. It has been defined as learning through action, learning by doing, learning through experience, and learning through discovery and exploration. That’s yoga alright. For our transportation theme we discovered balance in our bodies with airplane pose, we explored outer space by blasting off our rocket, i.e., counting down in seated child’s pose and rolling into shoulder stand.

“Experiential [learning] is a philosophy and methodology in which educators purposefully engage with students in direct experience and focused reflection in order to increase knowledge, develop skills, and clarify values” (Association for Experiential Education). With the help of yoga the preschoolers are achieving academic goals, increasing knowledge and developing skills. And it’s FUN! If you are interested in learning how yoga can help your child achieve his/her goals, contact YogaSprouts today! Whether in the classroom, home, yoga studio, or therapy setting, YogaSprouts is here to be a positive support in your child’s learning experience.

Happy learning! 🙂
